Bossypants by Tina Fey: The Audio Book

I am a big fan of Tina Fey, but it's taken me a few years to finally get around to Bossypants.  I am glad I waited to listen to the audio (on a trip to Wisconsin a few weeks ago) because having Tina Fey tell her story, complete with music and quirky side comments made it all worth while.  I just wished it had been longer!

Tina is someone a lot of women can identify with:  she was an awkward kid, went through the horrible "shag" haircut phase (for me, it was 1975, immediately followed by a failed Dorothy Hamill hair phase after the 1976 Olympics), wasn't very popular in high school, and was a geek at a time when being a geek wasn't so cool.  There was a smart, hilarious, tough woman waiting to come out, and when it did we got to know and love her.

Tina's book is about her life, from early days spending time at a theater camp, to working in a YMCA as a desk assistant in Chicago, and traveling around with the Second City troupe developing her improv skills and comedic timing.  What I like about Tina is that even though she had many intimidating experiences, she kept powering through and remained open to opportunities.

Tina also speaks to the idea of a woman being "the boss", and how tough it can be to take on that role even while knowing how competent and kick-ass you will be as the bossypants.

I wholeheartedly recommend Bossypants as an audio.  My drive to and from Wisconsin flew by listening to her, and she made me laugh out loud many times.  I now have to make time to watch 30 Rock.  Yes, I must confess I've never watched the show.  I think watching it now after listening to Bossypants will make me feel like I've got inside information on Tina Fey.

Rating:  8/10 for an audio book that was a pleasure to listen to, thanks to Tina Fey and her wonderful narration.  So funny and talented.

Available in paperback, ebook, and audio.  Listen to the audio if you can!

4 Basic Types of Door Locks

Are you planning on replacing your old and worn door locks? Below are 4 basic types of door locks for you to consider.

Knob Locks

One of the most common type of door locks, knob locks are used on all kinds of doors; front door, bedroom door, garage doors or rear patio doors.  These locks have knobs on both sides One side has a lock and the other side has a key hole to unlock the door. When replacing a knob lock, be sure to determine which side of the door the lock is on — you’ll need a right-hand knob lock for a doorknob on the right side of the door, a left-hand knob lock for a doorknob on the left side of the door. Because the locking mechanism is inside the knob (instead of the door) it can be easily broken with a hammer, wrench or rock and shouldn’t be the main security lock on a front door. Multi-Point

A multi-point locking system has a minimum of three locking points that all lock simultaneously by the turn of a key. These are most common on patio or French doors – typically uPVC doors – and less common for main entrance points. Some properties may use such a lock on the principle point of entry, though, and insurers will assess risk accordingly. Source: GoCompare

Nightlatches

Rather than being morticed into a door, a nightlatch is actually mounted onto the door. These are much less secure than mortice locks, but can be used as an additional security measure. Double-locking nightlatches are the most secure type of nightlatch as they have a keyhole on the handle inside the door so that the latch can be deadlocked from inside. Always look for a nightlatch which conforms to British Standards to ensure a high level of security. Source: MoneySupermarket

Cylinder Rim Locks

Cylinder rim locks are mounted on the inside of the door, they have a cylinder that connects to the keyhole on the outside of the door. If they do not comply with British Standard BS3621, additional security would be required; on timber doors they can be used in conjunction with a BS3621 approved mortice lock. Dried Beef Dip

Dried Beef Dip is made with only 3 ingredients and pairs perfectly with just about anything from crackers to fresh veggies. This dip is always one of the first to disappear!

Dried Beef Dip is made with only 3 ingredients and pairs perfectly with just about anything from fresh veggies to toasted baguette. So easy and so good!

If you happened to check out my Birthday Marshmallow Cereal Treats, you know that Elle’s birthday party was just a couple weeks ago. We kept things super simple by having the small gathering catered and the desserts made by a local bakery. It was most definitely the right decision because I wasn’t spazzing out the entire time trying to keep the food hot and worrying if I made enough cookies. I saved the spazzing for making sure no one tracked mud across my brand new wool rug from West Elm. Turns out a cream rug in an entryway is a terrible idea.

Even though we had everything taken care of, my step-brother’s girlfriend, Jen, brought a vegetable tray with the most amazing dip. It was whipped, creamy and the perfect companion to a load of fresh vegetables.

Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan

I've returned to what's referred to as "chick lit" for a bit, and I'm loving it.  In my humble opinion, no one can write chick lit quite like the British.  Jenny Colgan is a very popular writer in England, and some of her books are available in the U.S.  The number keeps growing as her fan base increases.  You can add me to that list of fans.

Once again, I grabbed this book off my bookshelves.  Still had the receipt in it dated April 1, 2015.  Almost a whole year!  I have looked at this book many times on my shelf, and even picked it up a few times.  But the time just wasn't right, and I wasn't in the mood to read it.  Jump to 2016 and I'm raring to go.  Part of the push was the fact that Jenny has a sequel to Little Beach Street Bakery coming out very soon, so I had to read the first so I can be ready to read the sequel.  Look for the review of Summer at Little Beach Street Bakery next week.

Polly Waterford is at a bad spot in her life:  her relationship with her live-in boyfriend is on the rocks, the business they worked so hard at establishing has ended, and they're broke.  Her boyfriend is a pretty miserable person (trust me, I wanted to reach into the novel and throttle him), and Polly ends up practically penniless and with nowhere to live.  Seeking peace and a place to lick her wounds, she ends up in the little town of Mount Polbearne in Cornwall.  This is a town that's a bit down on its luck, and is a bit isolated by the tides that cover the causeway every day, making Polbearne an island each day when the tide comes in--in other words, perfect for Polly.  She rents a rough flat above a bakery that sits silent and dusty, and begins to rebuild her life.

Polly has, of course, a gift for making bread.  She's gotten away from it, thanks to a boyfriend who wouldn't eat bread, but here in this little town, she begins to knead and fold her way into a new life.  What starts out at therapy quickly grows into making bread for the men who fish the waters off Cornwall, and word gets around that Polly makes the best bread anyone's ever had.  Of course, there is one particular person who isn't happy about this--Polly's landlord, Mrs.  Manse.  She runs the town's only bakery, and it is terrible.  Mass produced and trucked in bread and desserts that taste horrible.  Mrs. Manse's history with the town, and the fishing boats, is a sad one that shapes Polly's life and her future.

And then there is Huckle, an American who lives off the 'island' and has a beekeeping business,  His bees produce the best honey around.  Is he a friend, or something more?  Will Polly stay in Mount Polbearne, or move back to Plymouth and pick up her old life?

This was a well written novel about starting over.  Sometimes we have to lose everything to find that kernel, that spark, that makes us happy.  Some people are lucky and know it from the start, without having to experience heartache, and others, well... it can take awhile.  Polly is a great character; just an average woman looking for her place in the world.  We can all connect with her. The people of Polbearne are a wonderful cast of characters who love their little town, warts and all.

Rating:  8/10 for a setting that fired up my imagination, fantastic descriptions of bread that made my mouth water, and characters I can't wait to visit again in the sequel.  My only beef is the cover!  Polly bakes bread, not cupcakes.

Available in paperback, e-book, and audio book.

Designing Your Perfect Custom Home

One of the most exciting parts about building a custom home is the design process. It’s the part where you get to dream and be creative about what you would like to see in your home. Designing your home is one of the first steps in the process. If you already have a design, perfect! If you don’t, our award-winning designers will walk you through some of the steps.

Discovery and Inspiration Phase

The first step is to have our designer sit down with you and learn a bit more about your lifestyle, tastes, likes, dislikes and any special features that you may want to have in your home. You are a critical part of this stage as this is where we begin to map out what you have been envisioning. For this meeting feel free to bring other designs, layouts ideas or sketches that you have and would like to incorporate. It’s also a good time to help identify the elements that you don’t want in the home so we can truly design the perfect custom home.

Creative and Development Phase

Next, after we have a sense of what you would like, and consider your budget and any land constraints, we can start to bring the ideas into reality. A complete floor plan will be designed along with a 3D rendering to help you visualize the space. For us this is an exciting time as clients can finally see what they have been thinking and planning for years.

Refining Phase

After the initial creative and 3D renderings are presented, we encourage you to spend some time looking it over and thinking about each of the rooms and their elements and how everything will flow. Together we will revise and adjust the layout and design to make the space exactly what you want. This phase can consist of numerous emails, calls and meetings to help ensure everything is perfectly designed.

Budget Verification Phase

Next, once we have the final design approved by you, the designer will contact the builder and confirm all the specs and details for a final budget. This is where we can also talk about what additional support you might need with your package including general contractors, other trades, transportation and shipping.

Construction Begins

Once everything has been signed off we can begin to select the timber and begin construction. Sometimes during this phase there are some last minute changes. If you realize that you need some extra space, a wall moved, or you want some additional feature timber, we will work closely with you and the designers to adjust and adapt the design as we build.

Once we have the design completed in the log yard we will disassemble your home, ship it to your location, and build it on site.

The overall timeframe for this process can take as little as 6 months and up to a year or two depending on a number of factors. No matter the project and how long it takes, know that we are here to help you every step of the way and answer any questions that you have.

If you would like to learn more about how to get started building your log home, visit our Log Homes 101 section or check out our plans and galleries pages for some additional inspiration.

As always, feel free to contact us with any questions you have or for a quote. We would be happy to help!
