Many educators are great at bringing “experts” into their classrooms. I always say that the best person to teach kids about space is probably an astronaut, not necessarily a teacher.  I have seen teachers do this over and over again and it is an excellent opportunity for our students.

But do the students know how the teacher made that happen?  Other than saying, “I asked,” there are so many different ways that a teacher could make this happen.  Are we explicit about the process or do we merely celebrate the product?

In education, the process is the product. 

Not only should we go over the process of how we make those connections happen (amongst other things that teachers do to give students incredible opportunities for students), we should provide opportunities for our students to make those connections themselves.

This is leading by example and learning by example.

The opportunities teachers create for students are much more powerful when teachers teach students to create them for themselves.

April Reads: Debut Novels Abound!

A fresh, clean slate begins April reading--which I've started at the end of March.  After March's lackluster struggle to read, I'm pumped for April.  I start thinking about the next month's reads a few weeks in advance, and by the time I write my post, usually my choices have changed.  That was the case here.  I've got three titles that are debuts for the authors.  One, Louise Penny's Still Life, is her debut mystery novel in the Armand Ganache series.  Published in 2005, it's been around awhile, but it's new to me.  I've had so many people tell me to read this series, that I'm finally starting.  Just goes to show that any read is a new read if you haven't read it before.  I've got an ambitious list, but I honestly don't think I can wait any longer to read a few of these titles:


Reading for a book group where we have to read the debut novel of an author.  Gives me the excuse to finally read Louise Penny.



Another book group read.  I started it a long time ago, put it down, and didn't pick it back up.  This time, I'll finish it, and come at it with a fresh attitude. 


 This book has been so highly anticipated by so many people!  YA fantasy--a debut novel by Tomi Adeyemi.  Something completely different this month. 



Followers of my blog know I love Simone St. James.  This is her latest-in hardcover.  I bought it.  I expect to love this. Fingers crossed!




Short stories--and yes, Michael Andreasen's debut.  I've started this, and am captivated by his imagination.  I need to read more short story collections.  Publisher review.


I've always admired Maria Shriver.  A chance to review this for the publisher had me saying "yes".  A book about life and living it with an open heart and optimism.  I absolutely adore the cover.  

So I'm all over the place with my reads this month.  That's what makes it fun.  I may toss in a light novel to break up the month.  Spring has me wanting to read lighter novels to honor the time change and to celebrate (or mourn?) my release from self-induced hibernation.  Making plans to set up my front porch and back deck for optimal reading experiences as soon as warmer weather hits.

The simple shift here is having the learning shape what technology a student uses, not the technology shaping what learning can be done by the student.  Obviously, there is room for both as a “digital” portfolio can do many things that paper cannot (media, information over the years in one place and easily searchable, etc.).

For example, when I first looked at portfolios, I thought about “learning portfolios” versus “showcase portfolios.”  From a previous post:

If you took those 8 things, how could you bring those elements alive in a digital portfolio?

Here are two examples:

 

Voice How do we create an opportunity to create a digital footprint, through different mediums (video, audio, written, visual, etc.) it allows them to share their voice in ways, and on topics, that are meaningful to the learner?
Choice How will students share their work, both in and out of the curriculum, which allows them to take different pathways in their learning?  This could range from how students share their learning (assessment as learning), or even, what students choose to learn.

Could you figure out elements of learning for the other six that could be exemplified by a digital portfolio? If you can, what platform would THEN best serve the learning?

As I write this, I struggle with a “chicken and egg” scenario. I know I am biased on what can be done with a digital portfolio because I have done it myself. I know the technology can shape what we do in learning. What I am trying to work through in my head is asking, “What platform should we use?” the equivalent of “What apps should I download on my iPad?” It limits a focus on a bigger picture and narrows in on the technology, not the learning.

I had the opportunity to listen to Will Richardson recently, and he said something that I will paraphrase (and maybe messing up) that stuck with me:

“I don’t know the answers; I am just trying to ask better questions.”

If we start with trying to ask better questions instead of immediate answers, we seem to be starting in a much better place.

I have a passion for digital portfolios. I think that if we look at doing them in a way that is across grades, subjects, classrooms, and a shared platform in different teacher classes, they can be transformational to a school, district, and more importantly, to the learning of our students.

So I am often frustrated when the first question that I hear regarding digital portfolios is about the technology, not the learning. “What platform should we use?” is usually the main focus, instead of, “How will this shape learning in our classrooms in a way that we are not doing currently?”

Why Do Some Educators Burn Out While Others Seem to Grow More Passionate?


I'm really interested in know where passion comes from. And that's because I can't think of a single passionate educator who doesn't make a greater impact for kids. And on the other hand, I can't think of a single educator who seems burned out who can still be their very best for kids.

Who wants a teacher for their child who doesn't have passion for what they're doing? Anyone?

There are so many benefits to being passionate. Passion overcomes and eliminates apathy. It makes us stronger and more willing to take on challenges. Passion is caring deeply about work that matters and doing something about it.

When we are feeling passionate, we have more energy and enthusiasm. We are energized and not victimized. We believe we can overcome obstacles. We are able to translate that passion into commitment and do hard things, really hard things to get the most out of our abilities. 

When you listen to someone who is burned out, they often point to circumstances as the reason for their malaise. There is lack of support, lack of resources, problems with students, parents, administrators, other teachers, lawmakers, the department of education, society, you name it. And all of those things might be true.

But others faced with exactly the same circumstances seem to tell themselves a different story. They view the challenges as something to learn from and overcome. They seem to think differently. They focus on solutions instead of problems. They don't deny the problems or the barriers, but they are determined to focus on things they can control and not on the things they can't.

So why are they able to stay positive and passionate in spite of the challenges while others burn out?

People who avoid burnout and develop more passion do the following:

1. They believe they are growing.

People need to feel like they are making progress. We are wired to make progress. So if we feel we are stuck and not getting stronger or more capable, it can make us feel hopeless. People who are growing always have hope that things can get better. 

2. They feel like they are making a difference.

People need to feel like what they do matters. They want to feel like they are creating and contributing. Some people are making a difference but all they see are the problems and the ways they aren't having success. And that's when they burnout. We need to celebrate the little successes we have and know we are making things better.

3. They have a strong sense of purpose.


People need to feel like their work is connected to an important cause. We need to feel like we're part of something bigger than ourselves. Passion flows from a strong sense of purpose. Burn out happens when we focus on problems instead of purpose.4. They have a strong sense of autonomy.

Passionate people need to feel like they have some control over their destiny. We burn out when we feel we can't make the decisions or take the action needed to create change. But regardless of how much autonomy you actually have, you need to feel empowered by the autonomy you do have. There are certain things you always have autonomy over, like your attitude for instance.
 5. The share and connect with other passionate educators.


The people you share with and connect with most will have a big influence on your outlook. If you are around passionate educators and connect with them, you will likely feel your passion growing stronger also. On the other hand, if you are consistently around people who are negative and who lack energy, you will start to feel that way too.

6. They know when to set aside the work to rest, renew, and recharge.

Passionate educators don't have to be martyrs. It's great to have a high level of commitment, but you also have to know when it's time to be content with what you've done and take some time to set aside the work. Constantly worrying about your kids or your classroom won't help you in the long run. Create some white space just for you to find peace and rest.

For the most part, our choices determine our level of passion more than our circumstances. You can't control the environment of your school or the kids who are placed in your class, but you can control so much. Most importantly, you can control your mindset.

Purpose-Driven Learning

Seeing tweets, over and over again, regarding the villainization of “worksheets,” (I know I have been guilty of this as well) I tweeted the following:

Do I think worksheets are fantastic and super fun? Nope.

There are a million variations on what a “worksheet” can constitute. What I first see in my head doesn’t seem too compelling in my mind, but that doesn’t mean that can’t be beneficial.

In my own life, I am going to tell you straight up, that I do things I hate.

All. Of. The. Time.

But those things I hate, are often pathways to things I love, or in pursuit of a more significant purpose.  I have been focusing on my health lately, and running on the treadmill is something that I have dreaded for years. Recently, it has been easier because I am thinking of it differently, not because the activity has changed.

I am seeing it as part of a bigger picture and leading to a better quality of life for not only myself but the time I spend with my daughter. I have more energy at home than I have in a while, and that investment in myself, even when it is in something that I am not fond of, seems much more natural to not only endure but to embrace.

The same things will apply to students in a classroom.  They are more likely to embrace something that is not the most “engaging” when they know it is part of a bigger purpose. I have been guilty early on in my career of telling students that they have to do something, “because I said so.” They didn’t see the bigger picture because I couldn’t articulate it to them.  Probably, because I couldn’t see the purpose myself.

Of course, every educator would say they want their students to feel “empowered.” But, this is not about “compliance” versus “empowerment.” It is a spectrum.

It is about how sometimes the “compliance” leads to the skills and thoughts for “empowerment.”

This post is not about the purpose of worksheets.  Is it about getting people to think – Do worksheets (or a million other things in education) lead to something purposeful?

When you find that “purpose,” the hard and tedious things seem a lot easier to take. Without them though, the learner experience in our classrooms can be tough to swallow.
