My brain is in so many different social media spaces now that I have no idea where this question came from, but someone asked (paraphrased), “What do we mean by risk taking?”
I thought about it, and in my opinion, when people are talking about “risk taking” in the context of education, they are not meaning something dangerous to students (physically, emotionally, or mentally).
How often are we more comfortable with an “average known” over a possible “great unknown”? The risk is really going away from what you know, to what is possible.
But the other “risk” we need to think about is what if we don’t try to do something better for our students? Ignoring things like “digital citizenship” in school might not seem like a big deal now, but when a kid gets “googled” for their first job, do we not have responsibility as educators? Too often we only talk about the “real world” when it is beneficial to support our current views. What about the risk of students being dependent upon a “teacher” and not being able to learn on their own? Both are long term risks that we should not be willing to take.
What is the risk if we do, as opposed to the risk of if we don’t?
