3 Ways to Maintain Door Locks

Door locks are very much important when it comes to household security.  Keeping them working properly for a long time might be a challenge.  Here are 3 tips on how to maintain them, for your guidance.

Lubricate – Many people put up with the aggravation of a sticking door lock for years. Ironically, by cleaning and oiling them, you can fix most locks in a matter of minutes. Fixing a few stubborn locks might involve disassembling, cleaning, and then reassembling the lock.

First, clean the keyhole with a penetrating lubricant like WD-40. (Don’t apply household oil to the key or cylinder because it attracts dirt and eventually would gum up the lock.) Spray the lubricant into the keyhole itself and then spray it on the key. Slide the key in and out of the lock several times to spread the lubricant.

If this superficial cleaning doesn’t free the lock, eliminate the aggravation altogether: Take about ten minutes to disassemble, clean, and reassemble the entire door lock. Source: Dummies

Repair – A latch that doesn’t close correctly often necessitates repair or reinstallation. If the latch and the striker plate are misaligned, you can try removing the plate and reinstalling it. In cases where in the latch does not fit the striker plate properly, you can try replacing the striker plate to make sure that it is a perfect fit for the latch.

Lubricating and repairing door locks can be an easy project at home but if you think the door locks need more than the basic repairs, don’t hesitate to get in touch with an emergency locksmith.  Source: LocksmithSolutions

Adjustments – Regarding adjustments, the two parts of a door that most often require attention are hinges and closers. During lubrication, technicians should check hinge screws for tightness. In time, wood door frames dry out and screw holes open up, so the screw continues turning. When this happens, technicians should fill the hole with appropriate hardening filler, redrill the hole and replace the screw — or place a screw insert in the hole and replace the screw.

Closers operate either pneumatically using air or hydraulically using oil. Over time, the door begins to bang against the stop or does not close all the way. Technicians can correct this problem by adjusting the screw on the cylinder. This step regulates the stroke so the door just closes against the stop without banging or leaving a gap.
