This Fresh Peach Coffee Cake is the perfect way to show off the season’s juiciest peaches. Whether you pair it with your morning coffee or save it for dessert, it will be hard to eat just one slice.

I’m so excited to introduce you to our newest contributor, Allison from the blog Some the Wiser. She’ll be here everything sharing some of her favorite recipes! I hope you adore her as much as I do!

Summer in our neck of the woods is unofficially over already. The kids went back to school two weeks ago and even the weather got the memo because the temperature dropped 15 degrees overnight.

But just because the school already has us on a schedule, doesn’t mean I’m ready to give summer up just yet. The calendar still tells me we have a few more weeks of summer and the sun is still shining. I am planning to squeeze every drop of summer out of these last warm weeks that I can.

The Arrows Go Back and Forth #IMMOOC

Starting “The Innovator’s Mindset” MOOC this week (#IMMOOC), a lot of people are jumping into blogging, and many people are reluctant and nervous.  Rightfully so. It can be a daunting task.

But as you are doing it, think of this image created by my brother years ago:

Many people focus on the technologies on the outside.

Awesome.

Many people focus on the “teacher as learner” in the centre.

More awesome.

I always focus on the arrows.

Transformational.

If you notice something about the arrows, they go back and forth.  It is not only what you consume, but what you create.

Over the years, I have encouraged a lot of people to blog, and the ones that have stuck with it, I have seen grow tremendously.  But I also have grown from THEM blogging as well.  I know that every educator I interact with can make me a better educator, but I always ask, “where is your stuff?”  That “stuff”, is where many great ideas are not only shared, but are born, remixed, and shifted for someone else.

Transformational.

I was watching this very interesting documentary on the changing dynamics of the music industry recently titled “Artifact“, and it was powerful to watch how their industry was disrupted by technology, and how it has both had positive and negative repercussions.  Yet this quote (paraphrased) stuck out to me from one of the people interviewed:

“It’s easier than ever to make music and videos, but it’s harder than ever to beard with all the noise of the Internet.”

It stuck with me.  It is hard to get your blog post noticed by the masses when there is just so much out there.

But think of it this way…If one teacher reads your blog post and changes something for 20-25 students, that’s a pretty big impact.  That’s just if it makes an impact on only one.  What if it was 10?  100?  By no means would that be deemed “viral”, but what an impact it could make on schools today.

Think.

Reflect.

Share.

If you stick with it, I guarantee it will make an impact on at least one person. And if it is just one person, and they work with kids, the influence and inspiration will only spread.

Don’t think about only what you have to lose, but what you (and we) could possibly gain?

PMP:036 Four Suggestions on Providing Meaningful Feedback from Observations and Evaluations

I have a lot of friends who are good golfers. I am not one of them. But I recognize a good golfer when I see one. He or she is usually the one who gets the ball in the hole with the fewest strokes. One observation I’ve made about great golfers, however, is that most […]

It is your thinking that creates solutions, not any technology.

Over the past couple of weeks, I had some interesting questions from educators.

The first was from a math teacher asking me how I would use technology at the high school level with advanced placement students.

The next was from a teacher talking about using technology in a school where devices are used by students in relation to gangs.

My response to both of them was the same; I have no idea.

I thought about it more though, and the appreciation I have for these teachers is through the roof.  Both of them were asking questions on how to get better and how to make the learning better for these students.  Was there a way that technology could create better experience for both of these teachers.  In short, yes, but there are better people to answer these questions and give guidance than myself.  But they are on their way to a continuous journey of becoming better.  It all starts by asking questions to move forward, not to stand still.

The first step in becoming innovative is the thinking, not the tech.  In fact, the tech doesn’t necessarily mean you are innovative at all; it just means you are using technology.  There are far too many positions where the person in charge of “innovation” is really looking at how they use technology in the classroom, and ultimately nothing else.  They treat the word “innovation” as a buzzword, and nothing else, when it is so much more than that.  It is a different way of thinking and doing.  As long as educators continue to seek answers to questions that are ultimately benefitting the students in front of them, the further we will go in education.

It is your thinking that creates solutions, not any technology.

Use your words. #taketwo

My beast is a freshman this year. As if that isn’t just completely foreign enough, by week 4 she has joined a number of clubs/organizations to fill up all her, you know, free time. With pre-Ap and even an AP class, she just has so much of that. 😉 She originally was going try also be [...]
